The world record snowball fight was recorded in Leuven Belgium in 2009 with 5,768 participants. The great snowball fight of 2012 here on the Mesa had only 5 participants. But, what it lacked in numbers, it made up for in fun.
As the photographer, I was exempt from having ice crammed into every exposed orifice and fold of my clothes. Rather good planning I would say. But, there were braver ones who were ready to do battle. The teams spent the morning building bunkers which entailed digging fox holes, trenches and tunnels. They also packed and packed the snow until they thought their ammunition supply would outlast their opponents.
Once the bunkers and snowballs were completed, the battle began with a capture the flag twist. Although, the rules did appear to evolve as the war progressed. The following is an account of the fight.
The teams and their bunkers:
Team “Two Dudes”, Cousin Calvin and the Big Dude.

right: Team “Victory”; Lil’ Dude, Cousin Sierra and Uncle Steven.
left: Granny was recruited to help make ammo.

left: They also have a secret tunnel.
right: The Lil’ Dude instructed Uncle Steven “no beers in battle!” So, he had to plant his beer in the snow for later.
left: Let the battle begin!
right: Hee, hee, hee
left: The Lil’ Dude prepares for a sneak attack.
right: Calvin takes aim.
left: “bombs away!”
right: Ugh, right on the head!
left: Time for revenge.
right: Eeewww, snow down the shirt!
left: “nanny, nanny, boo, boo!”
right: “Ooooo, good shot!”
left: “Betcha can’t get me now!”
right and below: The “peanut gallery”.
…… some were interested.
…. and others were happy NOT to have snow down their shirts.
left and below: Another sneak attack.
…… Gotcha!
left: The teams “mix it up” in the field.
right: Uncle Steven “zeros in”.
…. maybe he won’t see me behind this tree.
right: What! Uncle Steven sneaks off with the flag!
