From Nebraska and the Oregon Trail, we headed North into South Dakota to see Mt. Rushmore. But, before we got there, we traversed some beautiful landscape, had some fun hikes and critter encounters.
Cascade Falls took us back to the time of the ole’ swimmin’ hole. The Hippygeek spotted the sign for this unsuspecting place and pulled over. It turned out to be a refreshing break from the unseasonable heat.
We continued on through Wind Cave National park to Custer State Park where we would spend the night on a very tipsy campsite. I’m not sure why they couldn’t have designed the campsites to be level but not a single one was. Even our levelers couldn’t make up the difference. We had to move our heads to the other end of the bed for the night to keep all of our blood from draining out of our eyeballs!
The Park maintains a bison herd of 1300 head which could be seen right next to the road.
A marmot at the campsite has learned that sometimes humans leave goodies behind!
We went for a short hike next to our campsite before a storm moved in. The storm brought with it some tremendous winds which we would have to endure for the next two days.
“For the man sound of body and serene of mind there is no such thing as bad weather; every day has its beauty, and storms which whip the blood do but make it pulse more vigorously.” George Gissing
