The Bed Races

The “Bourbon Bucks”  team was one of the crowd’s favorites.

One of the more amusing events of the Conch Republic week in Key West were the Bed Races. I still don’t know the origin of the event but, it is one of the oldest of the Independence Celebration.

Anyone can enter and the more imaginative the team, the more entertaining it gets. The idea is for a team to put together some sort of bed on wheels. One member of the team rides on the bed while the other four members push the bed down Duval Street.

The event started with a parade of beds down Duval street to the starting line so that the  crowd could review the competitors and pick their favorites. The teams were then paired off to race two at a time following a police escort down the race course. Times are kept and the one with the fastest time, wins.

The following is a little sampling of the event:

The Bourbon Bucks!!

They even looked good from behind!

” The costumes are fantastic and the attitudes couldn’t make you feel any more at home. The atmosphere is still absolutly one of the castaways and pirates of years ago.” A review by a tourist about Duval St.
