Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

As I get older, sleep is becoming more valuable and harder to come by. Even under the best of circumstances i.e. dark room, no noise, comfy bed and three pillows stuffed strategically around my body to create a cloud like environment, I still find it hard to get a restful night’s sleep. So, when I walk into the den and see the pack strewn about like discarded stuffed toys getting a great snooze at any time of day or night, I get a little envious.

The dogs romp and play out in the snow, eat some poopsicles (that’s not a type “O”) then come inside and PASS OUT! It could be in the middle of the day, the Dudes could be flying their remote control helicopters over their heads and they all would still be completely immobile. It’s not fair!

They are even cute when they sleep.

So, I decided that I should study their sleep habits and try to figure out what their secret is. After all, dogs sleep 12-18 hours a day, they obviously have it figured out. I thought I would start by studying their sleeping positions to see if any of it would translate to a good night’s sleep for me. Here it goes:

left: I could try resting my chin on an end table but, it makes my chin hurt just looking at it.

right: I could try resting my chin on the cushioned arm of the couch but, I can already feel a crook in my neck.

left: A couple of pillows and a blanket might be a little better but, I can still feel a crook in my neck.

right: This just has chiropractor written all over it.

…………and so does this one.

right: Again, with the arm rest. There must be something to that.

………there seems to be a pattern emerging here.

right: The “buddy system” seems to work.

…..  Maybe I need a new sleeping partner?

right: The “pillow thing” seems to be effective.

left: Three pillows seems to be the ticket.

Oh, I’ve got it! I just need a “pillow pet”!

Now I lay me down to sleep,
The king-size bed is soft and deep.
I sleep right in the center groove
My human being can hardly move!
I’ve trapped her legs, she’s tucked in tight
And here is where I pass the night
No one disturbs me or dares intrude
Till morning comes and “I want food!”
I sneak up slowly to begin
my nibbles on my human’s chin.
She wakes up quickly,
I have sharp teeth-
I’m a puppy, don’t you see?
For the morning’s here
and it’s time to play
I always seem to get my way.
So thank you Lord for giving me
This human person that I see.
The one who hugs and holds me tight
And shares her bed with me at night!

I think humans can learn a lot from dogs about sleeping and I would love to WAKE THEM ALL UP to find out their secrets but, their so cute, I guess I’ll just let sleeping dogs lie.
